Dario's 9 Black Friday Deals That Are Actually Good

Nov 17, 2023
by Dario DiGiulio
Money money

It's that special time of the year, when leaves turn, temperatures dip, we all partake in the ritual massacre of turkeys, and prices are arbitrarily lowered to encourage some early season consumption. Bird meat and pumpkin spice aside, there are some truly impressive deals to be had right now, whether you're in the market for bikes, components, or some kit to ride in. I did a cursory search around the internet and found a few discounted items I would actually buy, based on my own experience and the adoration of other PB testers.

I'm sure there are more steals to be found out there, but I'm just one guy on a computer and internet shopping can only hold my attention for so long. If you've found any other good deals out there, drop them into the comments—we'll look through them and do a follow up next week despite our tryptophan-enhanced food comas.

OneUp 240mm Dropper Post
$229 → $137

oneupcomponents.com

At this point, the reliable and unfussy nature of the OneUp Dropper is a staple of the industry, with all of us here at Pinkbike relying on them for our personal rides. They're long, easy to service, and inexpensive compared to the competition, which makes this sale all the more impressive. All of the posts are on sale, but getting a 240 for this little is a pretty hard offer to beat.

Looks like this, but all black.

Fox 38 Performance Elite
$1,149 → $747

shop.ridefox.com

As far as I'm concerned, the 38 is still the benchmark fork for the beefiest end of the single-crown spectrum, with excellent damping, a wide range of adjustment, and a stiff chassis to match the nature of the biggest pedal bikes around. There's no real reason to go with the bronzed-out Factory version over the all-black Performance Series Elite, as both contain the Grip2 damper and all the other bells and whistles you might desire. Plus, black looks cool.

Raaw Madonna V2 review

Raaw Madonna V2.2 Frame
$2,356 - $1,657

raawmtb.com

There may be a new Madonna V3 on the way, but don't do disregarding the prior model as dated or irrelevant. Sure, the updates and refinements are a welcomed improvement, but as Kaz said in his initial review of the V2.0 Madonna, the bike is built for the long haul, and should deliver a trusty and impressive ride for seasons to come. Swap your parts over, buy a used shock on the BuySell, and you've got a dope new bike.

photo

Lazer Coyote Kineticore
$109 → $82

lazersport.us

This is my personal go-to trail helmet, and is pretty much all I wear outside of the bike park. It's been reliable and comfortable for a couple seasons now, with plenty of scratches to prove it's worth. It fared well in Henry's review too, as the light construction, airy fit, and great value make it an easy win.

photo

Fezzari La Sal Peak
23-29% off ($4,799 → $3,399 best deal)

fezzari.com

It's not the newest bike on the block, but the Fezzari La Sal Peak is still a solid all-mountain bike for those in the market. It fared well at our 2022 Field Test, with positive notes on how comfortable and well-rounded it felt. I spent time on one for a separate test, and was impressed by the climbing ability - it felt more like a long-legged trail bike in that sense, which is probably a better match for most riders in most places.

photo

Race Face Indy Kneepad
$90 → $63

raceface.com

I've been using these kneepads for a bit over a year now, and I love them. They smell atrocious, the silicone can be irritating after a few hours of wear, but in many ways they're just the ideal pad for me. The fit is comfortable and secure, the pads work very well, and the adjustment is simple and effective. I'll have a long long term review up at some point, but suffice to say these are a solid choice.

photo

Hayes Dominion A4 Brakes
$250 → $187

hayesbicycle.com

Ever since our first positive review of the Hayes renaissance model, the Dominion A4 has remained a benchmark for how good a full-power brake can be these days. There are other top contenders, but the consistency, power, and light action of the Hayes is amongst the best. With a lower price, the picture is rosier than ever.

photo

Rimpact Pro V2 Tire Inserts
£85 → £60

rimpactmtb.com

Inserts may have fallen a bit out of fashion as of late, but for those who have been convinced of their benefits it can be a hard life to leave behind. I've always been a fan of the damped ride quality you get with a pair of tire noodles installed, and from my personal testing the Rimpact V2 is the best there is. Henry happened to agree in his big insert shootout a couple years ago, with back-to-back testing against all of the top options on the market. They're relatively easy to install and remove too, which is an added bonus.

photo

Specialized 2FO Clip Shoes
$150 → $70

specialized.com

A good, simple pair of shoes that last can be hard to find, which is why the 2FO Clips have become a staple for folks in that market. I'm not the biggest fan of laces over speedier adjusters, but they do allow you to tweak the fit more than other options, plus they have the most normal aesthetic as an added bonus.

For those keeping track, that's a combined savings of around $2,815, depending on the GBP exchange rate. Remember to tip your server, and happy shopping.

This year I pledged not to buy anything new that is a non-consumable item. Ie., no new car, phone, bike, clothes, or skis/snow gear. Consumables (aka food, bike tires, drivetrain parts, etc.) are going to have to be bought new, but in an effort to help your wallet (and conscious) I'd encourage you to try it out. It's actually pretty easy not to constantly buy new shit, when perfectly good used versions of those exist.
  • 316 10
are you even a mountain biker?
  • 116 3
The funny contradiction that exists for a lot of us is that we got into mountain biking because we like being outside. And because we like being outside, we maybe care about things like environmental concerns and sustainability.

Meanwhile, we find ourselves elbow deep in one of the most consumption driven industries that (at least personally) I've ever had cause to brush up against. Always being told to consume newer and better stuff that isn't any better and that we don't need. Things we don't think about at all when we are actually outside riding our bikes.

Kudos to you!

I've been doing it for a while now... it's easy when the cost of living doesn't allow extra expenses.

So how many times have you broken that pledge this year? Be honest.

I bought a new car last year. It was my first ever new car and it replaced the car that I was nearly killed in. I bought a new roadie this year. It replaced the 9 year old roadie I bought used, and have put 35,000 miles on, and it shows. I have no guilt about either purchase.

@mrbrighteyes. Will you shut up man? Are you trying to drive up used prices? Where are we going to get our supply if you reduce the number of Goombas buying new and turning over parts constantly?

 Are undies a consumable item?
  • 3 0
Completely agree with not engaging in reckless consumerism. That said, the bike industry is really struggling currently, so picking up something you do want or need from your favourite brands/retailers could be a good way to make sure they're still around in a year. We're due significant bankruptcies and consolidation in the next 12-18 months. Your favourite brands and retailers could use the support.
  • 1 0
@Roost66: I hadn’t seen that. Not great news for a guy that has been planning on selling a dreadnought for a couple of months but hasn’t taken the time to post it!
  • 8 1
@Roost66: Dreadnoughts are not 45% off, at least not on the Canadian site. It works out to 40.5% off of regular price, which is still pretty amazing, but not 45%.

I am not criticizing you, but Forbidden's claim of 45% sent out in their early access email, which specifically referred to the 45% as "Yes, that's the correct math."

No, it isn't.

To take the 30% off price and then apply the new 15% discount to the already discounted amount and call it 45% is just bad math.

You can easily prove this to yourself, with or without a calculator.
  • 2 1
@Schmolson: it’s like $200 in difference, plus, idgaf because I ordered one anyway.
  • 2 0
@Schmolson: bad math or marketing genius?
I had honestly never realised this so thank you for enlightening me!
  • 5 1
@Schmolson: I got a marketing pamphlet in the mail from my bank offering 20% more cashback on my card. I only get 1% cashback on that card right now and I detest signing up for sales programs or "buying clubs" or apps or promotionals like this, but I thought "Man, 21% cash back is a crazy good deal. Maybe I need to do this?" I read the fine print on the pamphlet and they meant 20% more than my 1% cash back, aka 1.2% cash back instead of 1%.

That's how they get you!

I have been riding the 2FO clip for around three months now and it has been hands down the best clipless shoe I have ever owned! Super comfy and bends around the pedal nicely. (not too floppy and not too stiff.) 100% would recommend. One thing to note is they size small, so if you are looking to get a pair size up from what you normally wear. and if you are sizing up from another brand jump two sizes. Or just try some out at your local specialized dealer. They are identical to the flat pedal version so you can try that as well. Phenomenal shoe!
  • 11 0
can confirm the 2fo DH flat pedal shoe is amazing also. the grippiest ive had so far on my raceface pedals.
  • 9 0
I love my 2FO Flats. 3rd pair now! Perfect fit 4 me. I've had one of each generation, but the 3G is somehow stickier & longer lasting, go figure...
  • 5 1
I went from 45 to 46 on similar advice and they are way to big. Size normal imo
  • 7 1
 2FO > 5/10
  • 3 3
Just bought two pairs of the flats off Competative Cyclist for super cheap. Really I wear them for everyday shoes more than riding. But they are great flat pedal shoes! And it's a plus there isn't any Specialized branding on them.
  • 6 1
@BarryWalstead: you really dont want to wear them as everyday shoes. The lack of flex in bike shoes is not great for your feet

Mine has been great. Probably be my last bike until I'm old, decrepit, and can't go fast (as fast as I think I am in my head anyway) so I swap it out for an e-cruiser to move around the old folks home.
  • 3 1
That's sick! I've had mine for around a month now and have no complaints! The bike seriously rips and handles incredibly well! Climbing is great with zero peddle bob with the shock unlocked, and descending is even better. I say this coming off a 2022 Specialized Demo Race and 2021 Specialized Enduro, which are both great bikes. Also customer service, in my experience, has been very responsive and quick to act (haven't broken anything on the bike yet, but did receive the bike with an improper installation of the bike protection/wrap). Fezzari sent out a fresh wrap basically the next day, no questions asked!

Canondale Jekyll like 35% off

  • 1 0
Nabbed a Canfield when they announced the bf sale. Had my eye on a lithium. Heavily considered knolly as well. Probably a better "deal"on the knolly but I needed that sweet cbf.
  • 2 0
@ulnar-landing: same. and same. i like the geo a little bit better on the Lithium, and my shock already fits it as opposed to having to go get a new one. it was between a Lithium, Madonna, Chilcotin, and Jekyll for me. I think I'm gonna like my choice.
  • 1 0
@Sweatypants: all great choices. I was looking for a big bike that could still be all around because tbh, I usually do one big trip a year and a handful of park days. I wanted something that could be used on my local trails which are chunky but limited elevation and pretty tight. Canfield geo seemed to be in a sweet spot to compliment my revel rascal.

I was thinking rail 29, chilcotin 151, fezarri la sal peak, and lithium, and the likes. I also really want a banshee because they are just so damn cool but the geo is just a touch conservative for me as it stands. I also am not sure I need that much chainstay/wheelbase. But probably the best looking bikes out there

The specialized sales piss me off as a Canadian. Status 140 and 160 frames for 750-850usd but I can’t get one in Canada after speaking to my dealer, and specialized customer service.

They also had a carbon levo half price which we also can’t get here. Their sale prices on the Canadian vs American website are so different.
  • 7 0
@Ryan2949: Sorry, man. I don't understand the workings of how Specialized figures the sale prices make sense in the US but not in Canada. If it was up to me, I'd give ya the deal, North American brother.

And if the travel length you need is out of stock, you can buy a different length and change it in 20 minutes by moving spacers, with no additional parts.
  • 2 0
@workingclasswhore: Discounts don’t do much good if everything is out of stock.
  • 1 1
@chrod: not true, while travel change is easy, you must have specialty tools ( special thin wall 8mm socket, modified freewheel tool with cutout slot and ground down flat 26mm socket). These tools are 80 bucks from Hayes. I modified existing tools I had with a grinder, is that possible? Yes, but a major pain in the ass. I would buy it next time.
  • 2 0
@valrock: I have not done a travel change on this form but I needed a thin wall socket for a 34 Step Cast. I found a 1/4" drive deepwell worked well since it was a lot thinner than a 3/8" drive socket. Chamferless sockets kinda suck to buy. I just make my own with an angle grinder. Only took a few minutes to get it good enough to work.
  • 1 0
 I use these:

- $13 Cheap long cassette lockring tool: amazon.com/gp/product/B00649NM1A
- $18 24mm / 30mm flat spanner wrench: ebay.com/itm/256189059115 (only required for Mezzer Expert)

You can skip the slotted cassette tool and get by with just an extended-length cassette lockring tool (just depress the shaft all the way), and a normal 1/4" drive 8mm socket.
No need for the 24mm socket if you have a Mezzer Pro which uses the cassette tool for both CSU top caps.

Mezzer service guide: hayesbicycle.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038198353-Mezzer-Pro
  • 1 0
@chrod: my point was it requires 3 tools that not everyone just have it. You are right, Mezzer takes regular 8mm sockets, majority of their forks do not, that special thin wall 8mm is thinner than your regular 'think wall' type of sockets. Can be made at home, but pain in the ass. Anyway, travel change is easy, super easy, as long you got proper tools

Just a reminder to contact your local shops to see if they have what you’re looking for - and more than likely they’ll be willing to match the price, or at least make an effort to get as close as possible.

Why not show a picture of a p-elite fork not a factory one since that's what's for sale. There's a TON of killer sales going on right now. TONS. The RAAW deal... if I was looking for a frame that's number 1 on my list right there. Fox has a bunch of good deals right now. Look out for Specialized.  Calipers are still in stock, $90 each. They work great with Code RSC levers, for anyone who has those already! 20% more hydraulic leverage and a similar lever throw due to short pad rollback.

Credit to @FaahkEet for being the first person I saw post about it
  • 1 1
@AndrewHornor: Wild, thx for the heads up.
Question (sorry didn't do this homework online yet) - will the dominion A4 calipers plug & play directly with sram hoses & if so would that need a coupling / hardware from hayes? Prob a question for them but it could possibly be easy to that moving w/o having to replace a rear internal brake line...
  • 1 1
@Mtn-Goat-13: I reused all of the SRAM bits. Its probably not the ideal fit, I could see the o-ring inside the olive expand a bit when I pressed the brake lever but its been leak free and braking great for a few months. The Code set was about 7 months old when I first put on the calipers so they were relatively new.

I did pickup Hayes specific bolt and olive but the dimensions look pretty similar. I'll put those on if/when a leak develops.
  • 2 1
I have the same experience with the SRAM hardware. The bolt bottomed out while the fitting is still loose enough to be turned. I can also see the o-ring expand under pressure, which was unsettling at first.

I even thought I had a leak, but it was just extra fluid sitting in the tiny gap between caliper body and banjo. Once cleaned better, no weep.

I'm likewise planning to pick up those Hayes bits - just in case.

For others reading, I want to add this setup is really good, but it doesn't do anything magical or better than the full Hayes setup, it's just a way to save a buck on a power upgrade if you already have Codes in good shape. And ideally swinglink models; Code R levers won't stop being awful with new calipers.

Fox 38 does not have a wide range of adjustable damping lol. You can ride with it fully locked out, and on other forks, it would be literally at half compression setting.
  • 1 0
I don't understand why people lock out their front.... Sometimes dampening can go so far that it is not useful....Fox included but it seems that you want an even larger envelope of unusefulness.
  • 2 0
@REZEN: Firm compression is very useful for jumping, especially steeper lips. Flow trails at parks are more fun when you have a stiff setup, you can pop off lips better.

Brexit was a pretty good deal, if you ask me.

@scott-townes: saying this to an Irishman does not seem particularly smart to me. But ok, feel free to be ignorant of history (and possibly geography as well). Cheers.

OneUp deals are worldwide I believe. Got a dropper for a great price

@scott-townes: Do you even know what you're talking about?

@scott-townes: You're a handbrake to human civilization. Sick of the Nazi wankers infesting this site and going unchecked. Sack up Pinkbike and boot these pricks, "free speech" doesn't apply outside the USA.

@caltife: Nothing says "progress" like belittling the experience of holocaust survivors because you didn't like a post on a biking website. LOL great job!
  • 5 0
@caltife: Agreed w/ yr sentiment but PB is based in... Canada. But even tho this guy is one of a couple of bile-mouthed tweens who can't be a bro to other bikers here, he's not calling for extirpation of nations and his tiny freshmen ideas & verbiage helps defines the adults here. Sure it's petty, annoying & infantile & contributed nothing but its not hate speech. As an American steeped in geography I almost peed myself w/ his Brexit comment from the Irish posting above. It is also true that too many Americans are moronic cro-mags with little more than inherited wealth & bad ideas (I live here & I know) but removing him or others in the Diaper Crue isn't the freedom any of us claim to have either.

You & the other commenters dunked on him pretty easily here and maybe this is sad but I'd rather see him & others get dunked openly than shut down. But a better idea might be to just not engage (Im guilty of engaging) bc people who get ignored usually find other hobbies & places to whine & gripe... . or is that wishful thinking?
  • 10 0
@caltife: Great analogy. This dude & one other (forgetting the name) are the smashed rim, the broken chain, flat fire, broken frame and 1990s geo of PB comments, hands down. Not sure I've ever read one bro-friendly hi-5 lets ride good or original idea from him... def the school-shooter / angry privileged guy angle if I've ever seen it here, and it sucks. Youd l think most people who ride & care enough to post here would be cool but not this guy... he's def the brake fluid in your lowers and leaking seals of all time here on PB...

 @Mtn-Goat-13: oh that was vicious!
  • 8 1
@Mtn-Goat-13: There was a comment recently where some guy was whining about white displacement by migration, and literally calling for race wars that would make people "stronger".... that's unabashedly modern Nazi doctrine, spouted by terrorists like Brevik and Tarrant. But nobody called it out, no moderation applied, just business as usual for the comments section.

And maybe @scott-townes is just a run-of-the-mill MAGA loudmouth, happily riding the populist wave into oblivion. But when even something as benign as "Dario's top deals" is inevitably hijacked by right wing tossers spreading bad vibes at best, and hateful misinformation at worst, then it starts getting to the point of wondering...why am I even visiting this website?

I come here because I love bikes, and want to get away from the awful issues looming over our species at the moment. I don't want to have to scroll past white supremacist nonsense, or mysoginst little limpdicks making fun of female riders, or a frothing mob tearing transgender athletes to shreds under the guise of "fairness". But it's all too common, and it shouldn't matter where PB is based - I'd really like to see the mods and editors taking a firmer approach in the name of basic decorum....and just plain staying on topic, for god's sake.
  • 6 0
@caltife: yeah it’s like some how, because the dynamic of PinkBike (or maybe the internet), the negative and hateful people are naturally the loudest. I get pretty burned out by that, and it existing within the mtb scene in general, so breaks/riding solo definitely work for me. However, it is nice to know there are users like you on this site.
  • 3 1
@leelau: I excel at hypebole... maybe just as bad as the negativity? Sad part is - I'll wager the griper above has some good stuff to say but...it's all smothered up by some self defeating public persona. But whatever - ultimately it's still just words flashing on a screen and it can be ignored.
  • 6 0
@caltife: You are absolutely true w/ this and I did not see that comment you noted or consider the previous (poor taste) comment by that guy to be serious but you are right & that should be countered. It sounds like that one was PB moderator territory and while I dislike censorship in some cases - because this site is about bikes & supporting bikes &
riders - comments like you noted
are rubbish & don't deserve airtime

On the Canada thing I just meant that it wasn't under the US banner of "freedom of speech" but even then that just means the govt cannot legally prosecute anyone for their ideas in writing or speech (vs slander, etc.) that when profited from is a legal hellhole.

Anyway - good points & while I can snark or flip at times, I consider others ideas here and yours are legit. I'm glad you replied & are clearly solid on it. Others need to see that here.

 OneUp 240mm Dropper Post
$229 → $137

what a pathetic scenario...
all common popular sizes for 200$, nice.
  • 6 1
That’s because contrary to PB reviews, no one really wants a 240 dropper.
