Podcast: Rob Warner Opens Up

Jan 24, 2024
by Davi Birks

Rob Warner is back in The Ride Companion studio for the most open, honest and unfiltered conversation he's ever released. During the episode Rob talks about the struggles he faced after losing his job as the World Cup commentator and what it was really like going back to the races. Rob also opens up about a topic he's wanted to share with the world for over six years and much more...

Rather than writing a lengthy description, we've chosen to let the episode speak for itself. The TRC team, (and no doubt the entire mountain bike community) extends a profound thank you to Rob. His contributions to our beloved sport are immeasurable, and allowing him the space to speak openly on these subjects was a privilege for all involved.

Watching this just pisses me off once again just how much Discovery & UCI have absolutely wrecked WC racing and not just from a fan standpoint but more importantly how it’s absolutely wrecking the lives of people who’s livelihood and being are/were so reliant on racing bikes at the highest level. Seeing Rob speaking to how hard it was and evidently still is for him just makes me feel for the guy so hard. I love that guy, he’s the spirit animal of DH racing and it just isn’t right what’s happened to him and is happening to others trying to make it into the scene. I won’t go down the path about how fans are f’ed in the states to watching it in any sort of effective way since that’s been talked about to death but even then to watch it without Rob just isn’t the same. I’m pulling hard to Red Bull to stand up their own series and create a vacuum of pulling all the talent from the UCI and put Rob back to where he needs to be. Honestly F the UCI and Discovery.
  • 24 2
I would love RB to take on the series, but that is a huge ask. The monopolized infrastructure that the UCI has over the bike racing world is going to be hard to replicate out of the gate (no pun intended).
  • 112 1
Danny Hart's 2011 World Champs run with Rob barely holding it together in the announcers' booth is the reason I started following DH regularly. While I wish I had watched at least some of last years races, the extra effort, cost, and the lack of Rob's voice made it easy to ignore. He's the voice of WCDH in my mind and that's very difficult to ignore.

@Hazab: I think the exact opposite they UCI is such a nightmare organization that the market is ripe for an alternative. DH and biking in general has so many people with charisma and UCI does everything in their power to turn the product into this clinical thing.

Red Bull or somebody taking the Hardline theme of collaboration to learn the course then a day of racing has huge appeal. I honestly prefer watching the best riders in the world riding together and sharing their film of their collective experience of the course than the race itself. Same thing goes for into the gnar there is riding and it is impressive, but what makes it watchable is the personalities.

Road racing and cyclocross are crazy competitive things and that is great, but it doesn't translate well to mountain biking. XC is leaning that way with all the cross over riders, but DH and enduro simply do not fit in those molds. UCI can't figure that out so we all need someone to come in and produce a better product.
  • 5 1
@Rigidjunkie: totally agree, I would have to imagine that the barrier to entry is having the crews, cameras, and expertise to stand up a competitive series and seeing as how RB has literally been doing it for a decade it should be an easy(ier) hostile takeover lol. My only thinking as to why it hasn’t happened right away is that the dollars aren’t flowing in the bike industry at the moment so once that turns around (1-5 years) then the time will be right. Unfortunately such a long period of time will lose some peak years of some great racers

its almost like monetizing, commodifying and commercializing everything is bad for everything
  • 4 0
@BobbyHillbomb: Same! A Youtube replay, I think, of Hart's run that year got me watching WCDH too. And at the time, I didn't realize how much of it was really Rob as well. It took a while longer for that aspect to sink in.

This happens to thousands of people every year when an outsourced contract goes to a different provider. At least RB kept him on. He had the opportunity to work for Warner but chose not to. That’s fair enough it’s his choice.

@ShreddieMercury: You mean like RB did for the whole time they were the broadcaster

I’ve been a fan of the sport since I started riding in the 90s, I remember staying up late to watch Sam hill win ft William worlds on free caster and I’m pretty sure I only ever missed one or 2 live races when Redbull covered it, I even blew shifts at work to stay at home at watch worlds, I payed last year and tried to follow it but it just wasn’t the same, I’m pretty sure I won’t be paying this year.

I reckon it's only a matter of time until WBD pull the plug on MTB, I don't think they're seeing anywhere near the ROI they want / expected.

As much as I can agree with your sentiment, listening too Aaron on the downtime podcast you get a different perspective for the feel of the changes. One thing that gets me with the Ride podcast is they are trying to evoke an emotional response and often using setup and language that is pretty aggressive and angry. The downtime podcast comes across as much more open, honest and balanced. Listening to them both gives you a good appreciation for the old school shout and roar and the more new school gentle approach.

@Deanosuar "it’s absolutely wrecking the lives of people who’s livelihood and being are/were so reliant on racing bikes at the highest level."

So what's your solution? Bring back Rob and the RB crew and, errr, wreck the career and life of Ric McLaughlin, Kate Mason, CG and the rest of their crew of commentators, camera people and crew? Do they not deserve to have a job?

What about the other co-commentators Rob has had over the Red Bull years who were replaced or let go? Is RB not equally as culpable for wrecking their livelihoods as Discovery supposedly is for wrecking Rob's?

I'm sorry but it's a facile argument to say that the Discovery rights takeover has made you angry on a point of principle for worker's rights.
  • 5 0
UCI is just there for the money. My cousin worked for Freecaster, and told me the UCI screwed the streaming rights while Freecaster was doing it without making much profit, but the UCI came asking to pay streaming rights and make the whole bill negative. F UCI.
  • 3 0
@zoobab2: Not that he's biased or anything. I'm pretty sure Rob himself acknowledges that when he was pissed on air screaming rambling nonsense on Freecaster it was objectively shit coverage. (Except for the one-liners)
  • 2 1
@wingguy: an that's exactly why we love him
  • 1 0
@BobbyHillbomb: that was the catalyst for me too, I knew about DH racing beforehand but after watching Danny's winning Champery run got me hooked since
  • 3 2
@zoobab2: f course they were. Do you think RB were doing as a charitable service. No they were doing it becuase they determined they sold enough drinks from it
  • 4 0
@OrangeBlood: Piss off an entire fanbase, probably not gonna go so good. Almost everyone who watched world cup DH racing was happy with the way it was. I do think RedBull could have done a better job, more coverage on the courses would have been great. I used to watch every race, I would even wake up early to watch it or at the very least watch the replays. I didn't watch anything last year which was such a shame with 3 Canadians crushing it!
  • 3 1
@BobbyHillbomb: 100% Absolutely criminal what’s been done to Rob. Almost seems like someone was personally gunning for his job the way the takeover was done. It’s not like they came to RB and asked to buy out Rob’s contract. It seems like Chris Ball and his buddies got together and decided they could do it better by putting one of their clique in the booth. The whole thing stinks and we riders and fans should absolutely start a movement to get our sport back. Because right now the state of it is complete shit.

This was magnificent. Rob's voice and (even more) his commentary are iconic in the mtb world. As soon as I'd hear his voice, my attention was drawn to the race and his balance of humour and insight made for such an enriching experience. I miss him on broadcasts and it's fair to say that my interest waned after his departure. Thanks, Pinkbike, for sharing it.

I want to believe this is the part of the story where our hero gets knocked down… but in a montage of glory manages to fight back and regain the title.

Yeah ok it’s storybook. But WC racing kinda needs a storybook ending right about now.

He was given the option of a contract by Discovery to carry on but chose not to. That’s fair enough it’s his choice, but don’t pretend he had no say in the decision
  • 5 0
@chrismac70: he was? What’s your source for that?
  • 2 0
@chrismac70: Even if that is the case (no idea if true), I'd assume he would have had to stop working for Redbull, and having watched the pod, that wouldn't have been a viable option for him, in his position there's no way I would have jumped ship from a company that looked after my and the sport's interests to WBD, so it wouldn't have been a real choice IMO.

Finding out Rob has Autism is one of the least surprising things I've ever heard, as someone coming from a similar place, and while just a couple years younger, still from a time people didn't talk about this. Thankful he's putting this out there for folks in a similar position, both old and young! PDA in particular is a very tough thing for folks outside of this experience to understand, especially when many people with autism are so talented in many areas, and seemingly walk away from, or "give up on", things that they seemingly love. Big props Rob!

Thank you Rob, and The Ride Companion, the amount of strength it takes to make such a public announcement (even in a comfortable environment) is massive! Normalizing men’s mental health is so needed these days. Also needed is other men that you can talk with, that won’t make fun of you, or see you as weak. I love that Rob said how good it felt to share.
  • 22 1
I fell in love with DH racing when I watched Danny Hart's infamous muddy/rainy winning ride only a few years ago. I had no MTB at the time, so couldn't really comprehend how insane Danny's riding is, but the commentator was so stoked... I've never heard anybody being so stoked on any kind of sports commenting. I went through all the Red Bull highlights vids later that day. Gwin's chainless win, Chainsaw's at MSA, you name it. I absorbed it and embraced my new favourite thing to watch.

Yes, past season had very cool racing but I don't think I'd even watch it if not for Rob's commentary some years ago.

Thank you, Rob!

The whole conversation on autism really hits home. Rob is describing my daughter. We were lucky as it only took 10 years, she was 15, to get the diagnosis. That diagnosis helped so much. The biggest thing to come from all of it is knowing that it is a disability. The hardest thing is that it is a disability that you cannot physically see. That makes it hard for a lot of people on the outside to understand what is going on.
  • 11 0
One thing I got from this podcast is Red Bull also deserve some credit for giving Rob a chance, and sticking by him, as an Autistic person myself I know how much hard work we can be, so kudos for them sticking by him and allowing him to do what he loves

I hope Rob reads this, that was a huge feat and his candor has the potential to help someone else struggling though a similar situation. I know he said he wants to move and not talk about it, but I hope he does keep talking about it. Every time he does someone else may hear his words and follow them out of darkness.

What RedBull has done for all forms of alternative sport has been absolutely incredible. We will likely never see a company like this again.

Same as watching the NFL without Al Michaels or John Madden. Something about their voices (including Rob) just made the events special. Not hearing Rob and not being able to tune in for free on RedBull TV sucks.

For as long as I have been riding bikes and watching the World Cup it’s been Rob and various other commentators. I have; I guess we all have a special part in our hearts / memories for his commentary.

It seems like he’s still processing it all and I wish him the best on his journey to finding his new path.

Mental health is important and something we should all be asking for help with when we eventually face something we can’t deal with; whatever it is. We should also be asking mates if they are ok if we feel they are going through hard times.. There is nothing wrong with asking for help, ever.

Rob Warner is an institution in our sport and I would love to see him involved back in media around Mountain Biking, whatever form that takes.
  • 6 0
I remember seeing Rob in magazines and on some highlight shows back in the media dark ages, the 90's. Then when the internet kicked in, I found Freecaster and would watch the racing live or the replay. Miss that office job I had at the time... Anyway, by far he has been the easiest person to listen to across any sport. I hope he finds something that would open more people up to this guy. He's brilliant.

This is why there isn't a lot of money in downhill racing or enduro. People like to do it, but not necessarily watch or follow it. Side note, I think Discovery is on the right track trying to shrink the field as it makes following the personalities and stories easier for casual fans. If the field is mixed up race to race it becomes harder to follow. Just need to look at F1, the racing is average at best, not many drivers and yet it's still popular. yes there a lot of factors as to why, but one is, it's easier to follow the personalities and teams. Like will Williams score a point this week, will Piastri beat Norris. Downhill needs more of that, rather than a heap of riders that have no chance making the top 30. I do like that pretty much anyone has a chance to race, but we need to accept that at some point it just becomes a burden, as an organizer and a viewer. Most races i'm forwarding through to find the riders i like rather than watching the whole event.
  • 2 1
@wolftwenty1: well, the racers knew they had to compensate the viewers for the lack of excitement in the commentary booth.
  • 6 0
@wolftwenty1: I actually fell in love with DH racing due to Rob's commentary. Commenting adds a layer, or call it perspective, which is like a bridge to understanding the event/sport. It's like coming to a trail for the very first time and seeing a guy who's stoked to ride and greets you with a smile, versus meeting a super-techy-cool rider who acts boring or/and inapproachable.
  • 5 6
@ajaxwalker: new to DH are you? Or just a tit? Its one

Utter rubbish
  • 4 0
@wolftwenty1: yup, pretty much the best racing ever.
The commentary wasnt that bad and the camera coverage was better than it has been since the mid 90s full 6min runs on eurosport.
  • 5 7
@Jready: No it’s not he is right and that’s the direction the sport needs to go in if you want to see riders make even more money than they already are. It’s the World Cup. It’s supposed to be the best of the best, not some fast randoms who think they should make a living riding a bike becuase they turn up and don’t qualify every race
  • 9 0
@chrismac70: completely disagree. You can say "he's right" and you can agree with people, however that doesn't mean you are right. It just means you're right in your mind.. That's all.
For some, it's all about the randoms, it's all about the chances. With using your logic we'd never have seen Dunne, we'd probably never have seen Coulanges win, or even Kolb... They'd never have got the chance in your version of WCDH.
The worlds best, doesn't just need to be the VERY best.. because on different days, different places, they're different people.
  • 4 1
@weeksy59: fair enough which means that your enjoyment for the odd random is no more valid. I would agree that there needs to be a continental based system to allow talent to rise though the ranks without having to spend as fortune going to world cups to bring through and find the best to feed into the world cups. I guess the question for that is who wants to take on the work of organising it and finding the funding that would be needed to make it work
  • 1 0
@chrismac70: that would be cracking yes, the IXS series is sort of that, but the locations are quite far for plenty of us in Europe, but spreading it around a bit as a European series, sounds fab. But it would take masses of organisation and it's unlikely to happen. But does potentially leave a massive hole between national series and world.

It's hard to see on-screen people in any way other than their broadcasts. I wouldn't have thought Rob Warner would have had issues in his private life. But we all do in different ways, and I don't know if he realizes that many of us redbull/rob/bart fans are still in denial and having grief. I am, since I only watch XC, having Bart behind the mic was nice, but Rob and Bart made it all work better. This whole Discovery experiment is going to turn out to be one of the worst deals ever for mountain bike racing and media consuming by fans.

As I have gotten older I have wondered if I am on the spectrum, things are eerily similar to what Rob describes. I hate changes in my routine, I hate airports all the lines and people make me so nervous, I get a loud voice when i talk about something im excited about and had always been told by teachers my voice carries and I dont notice I am loud. I guess maybe i should chat with a doctor.

Big respect to him for making the announcement, it must have been tough. It was an emotional watch but one that was both educational and also grounded in not using labels to make people like they dont belong to the 'normal'. Accepting people for who they are is such a strong message. Losing your sense of purpose in life and finding a new one, or rediscovering the old one, is hard. This was a really visceral and honest commentary on that too. Rob, thanks for putting yourself out there, no doubt yet again you will have touched peoples lives in a new and positive way. Keep doing that, your honesty and lust for life is a great combo.

A hero and a legend for the mtb community and now a absolute hero for all humans who share connections with autism. I feel the pain and why people miss him so
much on the WC… But the real story here is how he was able to succeed to the highest level at what he dos and think back on all the challenges and struggles he over come not knowing what was up and now that he knows how he can do even better and inspire all of us.  I enjoyed Rob's commentary over the years and he truly made DH racing events more exciting. I think mental issues indeed were always buried based on society's lack of understanding and awareness, and even the professions that study and treat them. If sharing his issues helps him, great, but I as I was watching this, I became disinterested I guess because of my lack of empathy as well. IME, many people have mental conditions and they are not issues or disorders, just part of the makeup of the person. If you need help just being "you", then I hope you find the help you need.

What a wonderful guy, it’s awful to hear how much losing the WC hurt him, but glad to hear he’s doing better. Rob changed the sport we love so much for the better and I’m forever grateful. As for his commentary, he’s the voice of the sport, plain and simple. Can’t wait to watch Hardline and and some more street races to hear him in action.

Thanks to this move by Discovery/UCI, I haven't seen any race in 2023 where I used to watch almost all when it was on Red Bull TV with Rob. Even the junior series that were free to watch, I have skipped because Rob wasn't there to hype me up. Such a shame. The TV commentors in the Netherlands are just such a boring pair with no knowledge at all. It's like Formula one all over again.
